| Layout explanation |
 |
There are three major elements to the layout; The menu, the Login box box and the info box.
• Main menu
The menu will take you to most of the organs of PPS. As you can see a drop-box will extend when the mouse is hovered over certain links.
• Login box

For logged in users, the Login box provides quick information about your current and new personal messages (PM's) and profile messages (PFM's).
It also provides ready access to your various settings, profile and buddies.Guests will only see a login form.
• Info box

To logged in users the info box displays the scroll messages, as well as the Poll, links to news items, site statistics and the Active Topics list. These can be collapsed or opened by clicking on the text or drop-down arrows highlighted in red. Guests will not see the active topics list, and the various parts are not collapsable. |
| The Chat |
 |
There are two ways of accessing the PPS irc channel; Via the web irc interface, or using an irc client (e.g. mIRC).
Those who wish to use a real client should look at the detailed mIRC guide.
Those without much experience in mIRC will prefer to use the web interface;
Click the 'Chat' link on the menu to take you to the chat area.
Here you need simply to type in a nickame,
and click 'Enter chat!'
If you have registered your nickname on Freenode.net (which we urge everyone to do, to prevent other people using your nickname), you can type in the password you used for your freenode nick (so not your PPS password). This option does not work when you open the chat in a new window, for security reasons.
Note: if you encounter a problem that looks like this:
...then simply try again with a different nickname. |
| Your Profile |
 |
Your profile contains various items of personal information, any personal picture & avatar you are using, and your Activity Info.
Your Profile Messages (PFM's) are displayed at the bottom of the Profile page. You can edit most aspects of your Profile by clicking on 'Control Panel' in the Quicklink box. |
| The Control Panel |
 |
There are three main parts to the Control Panel.
• Profile
Here you can respectively change/update your Personal information, Contact information or Images (personal picture and avatar).
• Site/Forum Settings
This is where you customise the majority of your settings regarding how the website and forums work for you, including changing your password.
All of the options are self-explanatory.
• Other
This part allows you to edit your subscriptions, your buddlist, and you can check new/unanswered/your posts. Both your supscriptions and buddylist are also accessible from the Login box (see Layout explanation for info about the Login box). |
| The Buddylist |
 |
The Buddylist allows you to have your own list of friends for quick access PM'ing, PFM'ing, and profile viewing.
Here's how it works:
1. Go to the profile of the user you would like to add to your buddylist.
2. In the Info box, click on 'Send buddy request' (If this user is already on your list, or if you've already sent a request and it's still pending, you'll see a message instead of a link)
3. It's now up to the user to accept or decline your request.
You can check the status of your (incoming and outgoing) requests, as well as accept or decline them, in your Control Panel.
If you receive a buddyrequest yourself, you'll be notified in the Login box (see Layout explanation for more info about the Login box).
To PM, PFM, or visit the profile of any of your buddies quickly, you can check out your buddylist at your own profile page.
The maximum buddy limit is 25.
You can see who's online as well; underlined usernames indicate logged in users. |
| Profile Messaging (PFM) |
 |
You can use the PFM feature to send PPS members messages which will appear below their profile for everyone to read. (It is possible to hide them from guests from your Control Panel) You can view your PFM's by clicking on 'PFM' (or Profile and then scroll down) in the Login box (see Layout explanation for info about the Login box).
Sending PFM's:
You can do this in several different ways. You can visit the profile of the user you'd like to PFM and click on 'Send Profile Message' in the Info box at the left. This will direct you to the bottom of that same page where you'll find a submit form to post a PFM.
You can also PFM a user from your buddylist or any other user's buddylist.
Receiving PFM's:
When you received a new PFM, the Login box will show the number of new PFM's in bright green text. Click on it to go to the bottom of your Profile page. New PFM's have this icon: in front of them. |
| Private Messaging (PM) |
 |
You can use the PM feature to send PPS members messages only the recipient is able to read. You can access your PM page by clicking on 'PM' in the Login box (see Layout explanation for info about the Login box).
Sending PFM's:
You can do this in several different ways. First of all, you can visit the profile of the user you'd like to PM and click on 'Send Private Message' in the Info box at the left.
Second, you can PM a user from your buddylist or any other user's buddylist.
Third, you can go to your PM page, click on 'send pm' and select the recipient from the users drop down box.
And fourth, below every post in the forums you'll find a link to PM the poster.
Receiving PFM's:
When you received a new PM, the Login box will show the number of new PM's in bright green text. Click on it to go to your PM page. New PM's have this icon: in front of them. |
| News-submit |
 |
Anyone can submit news for PPS. News related to parapsychology, spirituality, remarkable events, scientific discoveries, et cetera can all be submitted. After approval it will be posted on the main page.
At this point the newssubmit is under construction. But it'll be available within a day or 2. |
| News comments |
 |
| Share your opinion on news items by posting a news comment. Newscomments are listed below a news item, as well as the comment form. |
| Why was my registration declined? |
 |
Your answers to the three questions were not very elaborated, or they simply showed too much immaturity for our taste, or you gave bullshit answers, or you tried to register more than once using different nicknames, maybe it was something else. If you try to register again, please make a note about this in the request form. |
| Can I become a forum moderator? |
 |
Who knows. We could use a few more.
A PPS forum moderator is a person with:
1. Patience.
2. Experience and expertise on diplomacy, teamwork, interpersonal skills and hierarchical democracy.
3. Basic knowledge of (preferably all of the) covered topics at PPS.
4. Good developed logical thinking skills
5. Good English language skills
6. Personal interest in working voluntarily for PPS.
7. Time to spare for PPS, moderating takes time!
Administrators determine who meet these requirements. If you're interested, let us know. You don't have to be an active poster yourself (although we do base our judgements mostly on your posts), but you do have to browse each and every topic in the categories assigned to you, at least every 2 or 3 days, editing/replying where necessary.
Mail to info@ppsociety.com or send Fidex or DataTek a private message. |
| Can I become a website co-administrator? |
 |
| Can I become a chat operator? |
 |
|
Perhaps, but only if you've been around in the chat for a while and talked to the fellas of PPS. Let us know! info@ppsociety.com or PM Fidex or DataTek. |
| I can't log in! What now? |
 |
If you've forgotten your password, you can get a new
one. Click on 'Forgot
your pass?' in the login box at the top-right. Next,
enter the e-mail address with which you registered. A new password
together with a link to activate the new password will be sent to
that address.
No, that didn't help!
When I log in, it says 'logged in, redirecting...'.
But after that I am still not logged in!
Your problem probably lies with cookies. If you don't know what cookies
are, don't worry. I will explain it shortly: Cookies are files that
hold your login information and settings when you log in. The website
always checks if that cookie is present, to see if you are logged
in or not. If your browser has cookies disabled,
or if a high level of security is set in your browser, your cookie
can not be made and therefore the website can never see that you are
logged in!
Can we fix this without changing the level of security of my browser?
Yes we can!
If you are using Internet Explorer:
• Open Internet Explorer.
•
Click on 'Tools', then 'Internet options'.
•
Choose the 'Privacy' tab.
You will see a 'Settings' section and a 'Sites' button there. The 'Settings' section has a slidebar (which sets the level of security). If this slidebar is set higher than 'Medium', chances are this is the problem. But, we don't want to allow cookies from other sites, only this one, right?
•
Click on the 'Sites' button
A new window will appear with a field that has 'Address of Web site' above it.
•Enter ppsociety.com in that field, and DON'T HIT ENTER YET!
•Click on 'Allow', to allow this website to use cookies!
•Click on 'OK'.
Done! Now try to log in, it will most probably work!
If you're using Firefox:
• Click on 'Tools', then 'Options'.
• Click on the 'Privacy' tab, and in the list below that click on the 'Cookies' tab.
If the 'Allow sites to set Cookies' checkbox is unchecked (empty), then;
• Click on the 'Exceptions' button.
• Enter ppsociety.com under 'Address of web site'.
• Press enter or click 'Allow'.
• Click 'Close'
Still no luck?
